In 2025 especially, navigating the globe requires more than just a thirst for adventure. Understanding travel documentation is essential, whether crossing domestic borders or embarking on international journeys. Proper documentation ensures smooth passage, prevents delays, and avoids potential legal complications. This week we present our public service guide, providing a comprehensive overview of essential travel documents for various destinations and purposes. If you work with us as clients we will guide you through all the processes. If you're not a current client, save this article anyway, as it may remind you of something rather important to take care of before it's too late.

1. Real ID
Real ID is a federally mandated form of identification that will be required for boarding domestic flights and accessing federal facilities from May 7th 2025. It is designed to improve security and reduce identity fraud.
If you do not have a Real ID, you will need to present a different form of acceptable identification, such as a passport, to board any domestic flight or enter a federal facility.
To get a Real ID, you will need to visit your state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and provide additional documentation, such as a birth certificate and Social Security card. You may also need to pay a fee. As of now, according to the TSA, approximately only 56 percent of driver’s licenses in circulation nationally are REAL ID-compliant, so it's really important you complete this if you are also without a current passport and are planning to travel.
2. Passports
Planning international travel? Don't let an expired or soon-to-expire passport derail your trip! Many countries require your passport to be valid for several months beyond your intended stay. This means even if your passport technically doesn't expire until after you return, you could be denied entry. Renewing your passport well in advance ensures smooth travels and avoids last-minute stress or unexpected trip cancellations. We will let you know about your destination's specific requirements in order to give you plenty of time for the renewal process – it's better to be safe than sorry!

3. Visas
Both Visas and ETAs (Electronic Travel Authorizations) are pre-travel permissions that allow you to enter a foreign country, but they differ in a few key ways.
Visas tend to be more comprehensive and often involve a longer application process, requiring more detailed information and supporting documents (like financial proof, travel itineraries, etc.)
Typically they will be applied for at an embassy or consulate and may even involve an in-person interview.
They are granted for various purposes and durations and can be issued for tourism, work, study, or residency, with varying validity periods.
You usually receive a physical stamp (and coveted memento) in your passport
Learn about which countries require a Visa HERE.

4. ETAs
To some extent ETAs have replaced Visas in recent years. Application is entirely online or through an App and usually processed quickly (minutes to a few days).
An ETA application typically requires basic information and passport details, with fewer supporting documents and it is mainly for short-term tourist or business visits.
They are electronically linked to your passport with no physical stamp.
NEW for 2025 and IMPORTANT for all our European travellers:
From January 8th the UK now requires an ETA to enter. Apply HERE.
Most European countries will also be implementing a similar process THIS YEAR. However there is no set date yet and this has been delayed many times so far.

5. Driving Abroad
It's often a very late afterthought... do I or do I not need an International Driving Permit if I'm renting a car abroad?
It is illegal to drive without a valid license and insurance in most countries. Check The State Dept Country Information website for your destination's requirements.
Bear in mind that not all countries accept a U.S. driver's license, but most accept an International Driving Permit (IDP).
You can get an IDP from the AAA (American Automobile Association) before you leave. IDPs have limited validity and may need you to also have your U.S. license with you. The cost is currently $20.
