The Perfect Word For Wales

By: J5Travel

I've been back from our family trip to Wales for a couple of weeks and here's my slightly delayed trip report, which follows on nicely from Shanna's Scotland article last week.

So THE word?

ANSPARADIGAETHUS!

This is NOT the Welsh word for asparagus but a flamboyant (and in this case very appropriate) way of saying that something is absolutely amazing. It was the middle of July, so peak summer travel and we managed to find the secret of avoiding crowds during this time...it's Wales. Just look at the beach below and the accompanying coastal path walk. Absolute heaven if you like your beaches gigantic, wild, natural and with almost no one around.

Here's the Top 5 from the Rees family adventure in Wales.

1.Marloes Sands

While we did get lucky with the weather this day, we all were stunned that there were so few people in this area, tucked away in the SW coastal corner of Wales. This was even a Sunday when you'd expect locals to hit the beach too!

Known for its dramatic scenery, Marloes Sands features a broad expanse of golden sand backed by towering cliffs. The beach is famous for its striking rock formations, tidal pools, and clear waters. It clearly offers a relatively secluded and unspoiled environment, making it popular among nature lovers, walkers, and photographers.

Access involves a bit of a walk from the nearest car park, but the effort is rewarded with breathtaking views and a real sense of tranquility. The area is also rich in wildlife, particularly seabirds.

2. Local

We enjoyed a wonderful morning where we made bird feeders as part of a traditional willow weaving lesson, and this may have been the calmest 2 hours that the family has ever spent together. Click the Learn More button below for details on West Wales Willows. We followed it up with visits to an incredible Birds of Prey and Falconry demonstration followed by a tour of the National Botanic Garden of Wales.

Quite a day.

3. Grove of Narberth

Owners Neil and Zoe Kedward discovered the Grove as a derelict property in 2007, and have since worked tirelessly alongside a team of local tradesmen and craftwork specialists to lovingly restore the historic buildings and gardens with a focus on retaining its 15th century soul. The hotel interiors champion local materials and craftsmanship at every turn – traditional Welsh antique blankets are stitched onto the back of modern sofas, whilst local woollen textiles and quilts adorn the walls. The bar is made of Welsh steel and Pembrokeshire purple slate, while antique mining lamps have been upcycled as gentle lighting in many of the bedrooms.

4. Castles

There are more than 600 castles in Wales, with the greatest concentration by square mile in the whole of Europe. Some have been lived in continuously for a thousand years, while others are romantic ruins. Many are native Welsh castles, built by Welsh royal dynasties, often in very beautiful places. The biggest were built by Normans following their invasion in 1066.memorable retreat for travelers seeking a distinctive Scottish Highland experience.

I have a lot of photos of said castles now including Conwy, Beaumaris, Caernafon and Llawhaden.

5. The Smallest House in Great Britain

It's touristy for sure, but boy is it cute.

The smallest house in Great Britain is like a dollhouse that decided to go solo and live its best life. Nestled in the charming town of Conwy, Wales, this pint-sized abode boasts a grand total of just 72 inches in width. So, if you’ve ever dreamed of living in a place where you can fry an egg, watch TV, and answer the door without taking a single step, this is your dream home.

Despite its diminutive size, the house has a big personality and it’s been charming tourists for over 400 years, ever since it was first constructed.
