During her recent family summer getaway, our team member Kristin explored two vibrant regions—the sun-drenched Costa del Sol and the cultural heartbeat of Barcelona—before making a final stop in Milan. Here’s her insider guide, filled with experiences and recommendations to inspire your own travels.
The Costa del Sol: Coastal Charm & Andalusian Spirit
Base yourself in Málaga, a city alive with art, history, and infectious energy. Kristin’s visit coincided with the annual Feria, when the streets come alive with spontaneous dancing, music, and celebration.

Exploring the Alhambra
Just outside Málaga lies one of Spain’s most iconic sites—the Alhambra in Granada. This masterpiece of Moorish architecture is best explored with a private guide who can bring its history to life. Highlights include the Nasrid Palaces, Generalife Gardens, and the Alcazaba fortress.

On the way to Marbella, Kristin’s family stumbled upon Castillo Colomares, a whimsical, fairytale-like tribute to Christopher Columbus. With its intricate design and sweeping coastal views, this hidden gem is a photographer’s dream.
Barcelona: Gaudí’s Masterpieces & Gothic Grandeur
Barcelona is synonymous with Antoni Gaudí. To make the most of their time, Kristin’s family hired a private guide and driver, making it effortless to explore:
- Sagrada Familia – awe-inspiring and still in progress
- Casa Batlló – Gaudí’s colorful, imaginative design
- Palau Güell – a lesser-known but equally fascinating masterpiece
For a different view of the city, they embarked on a sunset sailboat cruise from Port Olympic, enjoying drinks and tapas as the sun dipped into the horizon.
The family stayed in the Gothic Quarter at the Kimpton Vividora, where the rooftop bar, spectacular views, and nightly complimentary wine hour captured Barcelona’s vibrant spirit.
A Final Stop in Milan 🇮🇹
On the way home, Kristin added an impromptu stop in Milan—Italy’s fashion and cultural capital. Staying at the elegant Grand Excelsior Gallia, the family enjoyed spa time, rooftop dining, and easy access to the city’s highlights.
The trip’s grand finale? A private viewing of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper. With strictly limited tickets and just 15 minutes to take it in, this rare encounter with one of the world’s most famous works of art was truly unforgettable.
