This week I am handing over to Sara, our Client Care & Operations Specialist and who was our most recent recruit back last summer. I wanted to produce an article from the perspective of a first time traveler to Europe. If you encounter Sara in your communication with us, you will most likely enjoy a bright, funny conversation or even email!
Top 5 - Ireland with Fresh Eyes
Kendall and I have been on a grand European tour for the past two and a half weeks visiting Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands. After spending six days in Ireland, we both found it to be the highlight of our trip even while traveling in the "off-season".
It’s a little daunting visiting Europe for the first time to know what to expect from the people, places, and cultures you are going to experience. Ireland completely blew my expectations away and put my first time European travel anxiety at ease. From the picturesque landscapes to the lively pub atmospheres and welcoming residents, I would highly recommend visiting Ireland for an unforgettable experience.
1. Killarney Park (above)
Situated in the quaint town of Killarney is the charming Killarney Park hotel. The warm and inviting interior of the hotel, rooms, and staff offer a sense of luxury relaxation along with five-star service. After a long travel day, we found respite in the lovely spa which features an indoor and outdoor hot tub, steam room, sauna, and indoor pool. Sip on an Irish coffee by the fireplace and enjoy the elevated traditional Irish cuisine at The Garden Bar or try The Peregrine restaurant for a more formal dining experience. Looking for something more adventurous? Take a few steps off of the property and you will find yourself right in the heart of the town of Killarney and within minutes of Killarney National Park. The streets are lined with local shops and art galleries along with bustling pubs and restaurants. No matter what type of traveler you are, Killarney Park will surely feel like home during your stay.
2. Iconic Pub Atmosphere (above & below)
Yes, that's me photoed below. When it comes to experiencing the true soul of Ireland, there's no better place than its traditional pubs. Irish pubs are a living testament to the country's rich history and culture with their wooden interiors, dim lighting, and classic memorabilia on the walls. Live traditional Irish folk music is often played in the pubs and creates an atmosphere unlike anything else I’ve ever experienced. Pubs in Ireland are not just places to drink, they are conversational spaces where locals come to chat or enjoy traditional food. Some pubs don’t even have a TV so don’t expect to go in and watch your favorite game! Sit back, sip on a pint of Guinness or a Gin and Tonic, and soak in the ambiance.
3. Sheen Falls Lodge (above and below)
On the bank of a cascading waterfall sits Sheen Falls Lodge, the ultimate relaxation resort. The property boasts stunning views of Kenmare Bay while offering a range of outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, biking, and a falconry to immerse yourself in nature. Kendall and I decided to give horseback riding a try and it did not disappoint. We rode quietly outside of the resort into the Irish countryside and were met with views of the falls, green pastures lined with stone walls, and long range mountain views. A wine tasting in the hidden wine cellar was also a must. Enjoy a variety of handpicked wines by their experienced sommelier right in one of Ireland’s largest wine cellars. Our room was the peak accommodation of our trip with its 180° view of the falls and wood burning fireplace. You will surely sleep peacefully with the symphony of the rushing falls in the background.
4. Ring of Kerry Tour (above and below)
The Ring of Kerry tour is a 112 mile loop of the stunning Iveragh Peninsula. Even if you’re traveling during "off-season" in Ireland, the Ring of Kerry Tour is a must to immerse yourself in the culture. On a rainy and foggy day, we were still rewarded with stunning views along with a variety of information about local history thanks to our wonderfully skilled guide through our trusted Ireland supplier Adams & Butler. Marvel at the Gap of Dunloe and the stunning landscapes of Killarney National Park, 26,000 acres home to Ireland’s highest mountains, various wildlife, and many lakes. Drive on along the panoramic coast, and explore the Skellig Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a filming location for Star Wars. You will also drive through Killarney, Kenmare, Killorglin, and many other quaint towns all unique in their own way. From the serene lakes of Killarney to the rugged cliffs of Valentia Island, this route captures the essence of Ireland's beauty and "Wild Atlantic Way". This was both Kendall and I’s favorite thing we did on our grand European tour.
5. The Westbury (below)
Voted the Best Hotel in Ireland by Condé Nast Traveler 2023 Readers' Choice Awards, The Westbury is an elegant landmark in the heart of Dublin. Experience a blend of Irish and International design in the luxurious rooms and upscale yet welcoming restaurants. Fancy an afternoon tea? The Gallery, located in The Wesbury, is renowned for its afternoon tea. Enjoy views over Grafton Street as you sample an enticing selection of sandwiches, scones and divine homemade pastries. The prime location is just steps away from Trinity College and the iconic Grafton Street where you can find great shopping, vibrant nightlife with pubs blaring live music, and talented street performers. If you want to take in all that Dublin has to offer, The Westbury is the ideal place for you. Maybe you’ll even get to see snow in Dublin like we did!
