This week's blog inspiration struck during some very heavy local rain, along with Shanna's question of: "Where would you want to go if it's raining?" I was up for that challenge. Also, if you don't get the headline reference then feel free to check out one of my favorite tunes from the late '90s by Travis HERE.
So, how about 5 ideas for destinations where you'd be perfectly happy if it rained? This is for everyone who can bloom with "rain-friendly" getaways.
Seattle, Washington | The Cozy Urban Escape
Why it works: Seattle is practically synonymous with rain, and its culture has adapted beautifully. Instead of dampening spirits, rain often enhances the city's cozy, intellectual, and artistic vibe.
Rainy Day Activities: World-class museums (MoPOP, Seattle Art Museum), countless independent bookstores and coffee shops, Pike Place Market (mostly covered), underground tours, breweries and distilleries. The emphasis here is on indoor exploration and enjoying the city's rich cultural scene from a warm, dry vantage point.
Team member Sarah (our wellness expert among other titles😀) lives here and absolutely loves it. I visited in late February and amazingly it didn't rain, which was really annoying.
Kyoto, Japan | Serenity in the Mist
Kyoto somehow gets mentioned for the second week in a row!
Why it works: Rain transforms Kyoto's ancient temples, moss gardens, and bamboo groves into ethereal, almost mystical landscapes. The quiet patter of rain enhances the sense of peace and contemplation.
Rainy Day Activities: Exploring temples and shrines (many have covered walkways or beautiful indoor viewing areas), visiting traditional tea houses, indulging in a multi-course kaiseki meal, exploring Nishiki Market, attending a pottery class, or simply watching the rain from a traditional ryokan.
Edinburgh, Scotland | Historic Haunts and Pub Comforts
Why it works: Much like Seattle, Edinburgh has a reputation for changeable weather, and rain often adds to its dramatic, historic atmosphere. The city's many pubs, cozy cafes, and indoor attractions become even more inviting.
Rainy Day Activities: Exploring Edinburgh Castle, visiting the National Museum of Scotland, touring the Real Mary King's Close (underground), delving into the Scottish National Gallery, enjoying whisky tastings, and, of course, seeking refuge and warmth in a traditional Scottish pub with live music.
Vancouver, British Columbia | Rainforest City Delights
Why it works: Vancouver is nestled within a temperate rainforest, and rain is a natural part of its ecosystem. The city is designed to handle it, and the surrounding natural beauty (lush forests, misty mountains) is often enhanced by precipitation.
Rainy Day Activities: Vancouver Aquarium, Science World, Museum of Anthropology, exploring Granville Island Public Market (covered), cozying up in a Yaletown coffee shop, visiting the Vancouver Art Gallery, or even experiencing the thrill of a covered outdoor activity like walking the Capilano Suspension Bridge, which often looks incredible even in the mist.
Amsterdam, Netherlands | Canal Views and Museum Marvels
Why it works: While sunshine is lovely, rain in Amsterdam often adds a romantic, reflective quality to the city's canals and historic architecture. The city's compact nature and abundance of world-class indoor attractions make it incredibly rain-friendly.
Rainy Day Activities: Visiting the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, exploring the many canal-side cafes and brown bars, taking a canal cruise (many boats are covered), Browse through independent boutiques, or simply people-watching from a cozy establishment.
