Mexico -
Safe & Sexy

September 25, 2020

I'm just going to say it. Mexico gets a bad rap, especially as a tourist destination.

Over 45 million foreign visitors enjoyed Mexico in 2019 and a monumentally overwhelming majority of these trips passed without incident. As with almost every country there are areas to be avoided. Do that, and you will never have any issues. Stay in a luxury property anywhere in the country and you will never have any issues.
Mexico has everything for the luxury traveler. Incredible family friendly All-Inclusive properties, gorgeous boutique resorts and haciendas, culture going back thousands of years, charm, great food, great beaches, great golf, great value...it's a long list. Covid protocols are strong according to my network of trusted fellow advisors and I am yet to hear of a Covid-related tourist incident since the country reopened in July.
I am lucky enough to be hopping to Los Cabos myself in a couple of weeks and will report back especially on this aspect of Mexican travel currently. So this weeks Top 5 features some of my favorite properties from all over the country, and before that, a last plug for a while for Context Conversations who we have partnered with for your Virtual Travel pleasure.

Top 5 - Safe and Sexy Mexico Hotels and Resorts

1. Cala de Mar Resort & Spa Ixtapa
This whole post was really inspired by our friends and clients currently on their honeymoon at this very property, and absolutely raving about it. They have also been gracious enough to share their photos (above and below). I wish them a safe trip home tomorrow!
With each of its 59 suites featuring a master bedroom and an outdoor living area with a terrace and a private plunge pool overlooking the sea, Cala de Mar Resort & Spa Ixtapa professes traditional Mexican touches; handmade clay and stone meet sleek marble and polished hardwoods. The 4,000-square-foot spa features outdoor treatment areas and locally inspired therapies using native herbs. Then retire to the private plunge pool on your terrace to contemplate the blue Pacific rolling toward the cliffs below.
Virtuoso Amenities apply.

2. Andaz Mayakoba (below)
I personally enjoyed this property back in May 2017, and was so impressed at the time with the amount of space the resort occupied. I loved pedalling around the property on bikes that you could just pick up and go wherever you found them! With the option of either a beachfront or pool setting within this private-gated Mayakoba complex, and surrounded by tranquil lagoons and lush vegetation with nature trails that guests can enjoy for walking, jogging, and the biking while listening to the sounds of nature, this was an incredibly relaxing stay. As a HYATT PRIVÉ property, we are able to offer all these complimentary amenities:

  • $100 Property Credit
  • Room Upgrade (confirmed within 24 hours of booking if available)
  • Breakfast for Two
  • Welcome Amenity
  • Early Check-In
  • Connecting Rooms guaranteed if required
  • Free Wifi

Also note that many HYATT PRIVÉ properties are currently offering 3 nights for the price of 2, combinable with all the above amenities.

3. Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada, San Miguel De Allende
A cluster of historic buildings at the center of the city, this charming luxury hotel (above) offers the ultimate Mexican experience. Cool, leafy gardens, stone arches and traditional wooden doors surround pretty courtyards. As night falls, lanterns illuminate the exquisite details. The hotel is a haven of peace, especially within the serene Laja Spa. However, just outside are San Miguel de Allende’s (below) many colors, scents and sounds. Cobblestone streets, the festival capital of Mexico and a mecca for gastronomes!
As a Bellini Club property we have exclusive access to the following complimentary amenities:

  • Upgrade on arrival, based on availability
  • WiFi
  • Buffet or full breakfast for 2, daily
  • Hotel credit up to $200 per stay
  • VIP Recognition by property management and staff
  • Special in-room welcome amenity

4. Thompson Zihuatanejo, a Beach Resort (above and below)
Along the white sands of Playa La Ropa, the premier swimming beach of Mexico’s Pacific coast, Thompson’s refined beachfront luxury brings a refreshing alternative to the Zihuatanejo-Ixtapa hotel and resort experience. Unwind to tranquil waves. Relax in a private plunge pool. Or roam a lush jungle landscape punctuated by cool waterfalls and tranquil lagoons.
This is another HYATT PRIVÉ property thanks to Hyatt's acquisition of Two Roads Hospitality in October 2018. The same complimentary amenities apply as for Andaz above, and this property also has a 3 for 2 offer currently.

5. Grand Velas Los Cabos
Maybe not quite such a sexy property, but I can't leave a family-friendly property out of my recommendations. This AAA Five Diamond resort offers the next generation of all-inclusive amenities and facilities, with dramatic ocean views and unique spaces throughout. Grand Velas Los Cabos features a variety of gourmet restaurants; a coffee shop, a mezcal and tequila tasting room, wine-based features, inspired by Mexico’s wine region, a spa with hydrotherapy facilities, a fitness center with programs and personal trainers, and three oceanfront pools. Families will enjoy recreational activities, as well as a Teens’ Club (below) and Kids’ Club. 1,100 sq ft is the entry level Suite!

All the following Virtuoso complimentary amenities apply:

  • A La Carte and Buffet Breakfast
  • Complimentary one-way private airport transfer ( From Airport to the Hotel)
  • $50 Spa credit per adult per stay
  • $100 food & beverage credit toward a private romantic dinner
  • Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
