Keep Your Sights on the Spice Island

By: J5Travel

All eyes were recently on the Caribbean island of Grenada as the world watched Hurricane Beryl make landfall in the Windward Islands at the beginning of July. While some parts of Grenada were fortunate to be spared from the devastating effects of the storm, the North of the island and Grenada’s sister islands, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, were severely affected. As Grenada’s international airport reopened on July 2nd and all hotels remained fully functioning, Shanna’s FAM (familiarization trip) continued as planned a week later. With hurricane relief donations in tow, she and a group of travel advisors set south to experience the first ever Six Senses in North America.

Grenada is an island country of the West Indies in the eastern Caribbean Sea about 100 miles north off the coast of Venezuela. The island is home to lush tropical landscapes, pristine beaches, vibrant culture, thrilling activities, wellness experiences, and a thriving culinary scene. Shanna was lucky enough to experience the island’s diversity through two newly opened properties, each offering a distinct aesthetic and experience.

Newly opened in April 2024, Six Senses debuted its first ever North American and Caribbean property in Grenada. Six Senses La Sagesse’s lagoon promenade and oceanfront oasis blends perfectly with the natural topography of the land. From the daily hands-on workshops at Earth Lab and Alchemy Bar, to the solar panels that heat the resort’s water, to the farm-to-table cooking, the brand’s sustainable efforts provide a center of engagement and innovation. Reset and rejuvenate at the Spa with high-tech therapies and pioneering wellness programs. Opening offers run through December 21, 2024 so connect with us to book your pool suite or villa!

2. Reggae Fields Journey

Dubbed the Isle of Spice or Spice Island, the island's volcanic origins have allowed for fertile soil, providing the ideal conditions for the cultivation of spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves. Aligned with the ethos of Six Senses, we had the privilege of visiting a Grenadian farmer immersed in Rastafarian lifestyle. This enriching encounter seamlessly integrated tradition, culture, and the art of chocolate-making. We savored tropical fruits, learned how nutmeg is harvested, and enjoyed a homemade vegetarian meal sourced straight from their land.

3. Underwater Sculpture Park

To cap off the FAM trip, the group set sail along the Caribbean Sea overlooking St George’s, the historic capital of Grenada. The highlight of the sunset sail was visiting the most popular snorkeling site on the island - Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park. Created by renowned sculptor Jason de Caires Taylor and installed in 2006, the underwater gallery of concrete structures provides a new basin for marine life and coral to grow.
