Beyond the Podium: Italy’s (Still) Secret Arc

By: J5Travel

· Travel,Italy,Europe

There is a prevailing myth in travel that once the Olympic flame is extinguished, a destination is forever surrendered to the masses. Conventional wisdom suggests that the spotlight leaves a place crowded and "discovered."

However, as four members of the J5 team explore the Italian north just weeks after the Winter Games, we’ve found that the opposite is true. While the world may have watched these slopes on their screens, the jagged embrace of the Dolomites and the medieval grace of Bergamo remain remarkably under the radar.

For the traveler who has already checked Rome, Florence, and Venice off their list, these regions represent the ultimate next frontier—a landscape of quiet luxury and architectural mastery. If you think you’ve seen the heart of Italy, these hidden peaks are waiting to prove you wrong.

Here are the Top 5 highlights from the first leg of our journey.

1. Cortina d’Ampezzo & Rosapetra Spa Resort

Known as the "Queen of the Dolomites," Cortina carries its Olympic legacy with an understated confidence. The town has settled back into a refined pace where the social energy of the Corso Italia meets the silent majesty of the Tofane peaks.

Just minutes away lies Rosapetra Spa Resort, a sanctuary of fragrant fir wood and local stone. It feels less like a resort and more like an intimate alpine hideaway. The standout? A swim in the panoramic pool that feels like a private audience with the mountains.

2. The Ethereal Lago di Braies

If Cortina is the social heart, Lago di Braies is the contemplative soul. While it is often photographed, it is rarely truly felt. To experience its hushed grandeur, our team swapped city shoes for crampons, trekking across the crystalline landscape. There is a tactile luxury in the "crunch" of steel on ice beneath the snow-dusted face of the Croda del Becco—a rigorous, meditative perspective that summer tourists simply miss.

3. Ancora Hotel Cortina: A Landmark Reimagined

For those seeking the town’s sophisticated heartbeat, Ancora Hotel Cortina is a masterpiece. Following a 2025 redesign by fashion visionary Renzo Rosso and designer Vicky Charles, this 1826 landmark blends original hand-painted ceilings with bold, Soho House-inspired textures. It perfectly captures "under the radar" luxury, offering an "old soul" experience through a sharp, contemporary lens.

4. Lefay Resort & Spa Dolomiti, Pinzolo

Lefay is a leap into the future of eco-luxury. Carved into the mountainside using "bio-architecture," the resort virtually disappears into the surrounding forest. Its 5,000-square-meter spa—one of the largest in the Alps—offers a "World of Water and Fire" that includes salt-water lakes and therapeutic grottos. It is a true "zen" masterpiece where the connection to the landscape feels entirely unfiltered.

5. Madonna di Campiglio & Chalet del Sogno

Known as the "Pearl of the Brenta Dolomites," Madonna di Campiglio offers a chic, boutique-filled alternative to the broader tourist trails. On the edge of the Spinale forest, Chalet del Sogno serves as the ultimate manifestation of "quiet luxury."

This 18-suite sanctuary is heated by geothermal energy and built from fragrant larch and fir. We were honored to be hosted by owner Alberto Schiavon—a former Olympic competitor in Snowboard Cross—who personally showed us the town’s spectacular viewpoints. It is the perfect finale for the traveler seeking a stay that is as environmentally conscious as it is undeniably elegant.
